Wilsden Gala raises £2000 for community causes

A message from Wilsden Gala Committee:

gala-logo-2015Wilsden Gala Committee have announced that 2015’s animal-themed event, held back in July, has raised nearly £2000 for good causes in their community.

“We’re very pleased with the total raised, which is similar to the amount made by the 2014 gala – and that was despite losing the last hour of the 2015 event to some very dramatic weather!” said Mark Anslow, the committee chairman. “It’s great that as well as providing an enjoyable summer fun day for families in the village, we can also put something back into the community that will benefit people all year round.”

Of the £2000 profits, £400 will be put towards the 2016 event. The remainder will be divided between three charities. The biggest beneficiary is Wilsden Village Hall’s 40 Candles refurbishment appeal, which has received a donation of £1200 from the gala committee. Wilsden Cricket Club, who have hosted the gala for the past two years, have received a donation of £250, and St John’s Ambulance received £150.

The village hall also received a further donation of £400 from Wilsden Women’s Institute, who donated the majority of their profits from selling tea, sandwiches and cakes at the gala to the 40 Candles refurbishment appeal.

“It’s brilliant that the village are getting so involved in supporting the village hall’s refurbishment appeal as we approach our 40th birthday,” said trustee Lisa Firth, speaking on behalf of Wilsden Village Hall. “The contributions from the gala committee and WI have now taken the total raised up to £1884. The WVH management committee would like to say a massive thank you to the gala committee volunteers for all their hard work organising this amazing family event and of course for supporting the appeal. We are also very grateful to the WI for their generous donation, raised selling their always delicious refreshments on gala day. The village hall is used by 30-plus groups, with footfall from hundreds of village residents every week, all of whom will benefit from the planned refurbishment.”

Plans are now under way for Wilsden Children’s Gala 2016, which the committee – all volunteers from within the community – hope will be even bigger and better than this year’s event. As in previous years, there will be plenty of opportunities for Wilsden kids to get involved in the lead up to the event, whether it’s designing the 2016 programme cover or entering the draw to become next year’s gala king or queen at the Gala Disco in February.
