New events group will “bring community together”

Wilsden Village Hall is seeking members for a new group to organise social events which will build community spirit in the village, tackle isolation and loneliness and raise funds for the hall.

Lisa Firth, a member of the village hall management committee who is leading the search for volunteers, said: “When I was growing up in Wilsden there were all sorts of events on: the Christmas panto, novelty sports events, evening dances. People got to meet their neighbours and feel they were part of something. But these days, events like that are few and far between. We want to change all that, and put community back at the heart of village hall fundraising.”

Lisa also hopes that the tentatively named Wilsden Entertainments Society will act as a springboard for getting new social groups off the ground, such as a film club or an amdram theatre group.

“All that’s required is enthusiasm, commitment and of course a good sense of humour and fun,” says Lisa. “We’ll meet one evening a month in one of the village pubs. There have been plenty of ideas from those who have volunteered so far – theme nights, murder mysteries, quizzes, singalong film nights, duck races, ceilidhs, a pantomime – and new members will no doubt have many more. There is often a feeling expressed that Wilsden doesn’t have the community spirit it once had. I hope people will join us in doing something about it!”
